Wishful Thinking

Return to article listing.

Inspired by an article in this month's Sports Illustrated, I got to thinking (which is quite a feat in itself). Wouldn't it be nice once, just once, if...

... developers created games with the community, instead of just "what we think you'll like"?

... Tomcat-X actually apologized for his actions and became a model community member?

... Sierra took their heads out of their asses and:
- listened to the community for once?
- apologized, rehired, given a letter of "how stupid we are" and offered the jobs back to every Dynamix employee they've ever wrongfully fired?
- wouldn't spam the community forums with advertisements of other "great" Sierra products?
- realized, "Hey, we're f*cking idiots!"?

... ShatteredStar actually created a website that was viewable in more than one browser at a specific resolution at a certain time of the day while the moon is aligned just right... and didn't create a hazard to your vision?

... VibrioCholera created a meaningful post or started a non-spam thread?

... PlanetTribes wasn't owned by Gamespy so they could've kept their rightful name as PlanetStarseige?

... Marweas submitted news and gave information to Tribes sites other than TribalWar?

... someone would open up their eyes and realize how awesome it'd be to create a Starsiege ATR on the Torque Engine?

... Microsoft made a windows that didn't require regular patches and security updates just to keep the OS running?

... Vector's @the-junkyard.net email actually worked?

... Bungie wasn't bought out by Microsoft so we would all be playing a nice game of Halo on our PC's / Mac's right about now?

... that damned UE Error would disappear from Tribes 2?

... Garage Games created the much needed 1.005 patch for Starsiege?

... we all owned a working jetpack with a nifty stormhammer to destroy those pesky squirrels?

... Tribers would realize that they wouldn't stand a chance against a HERC? I mean, com'on.

... nerds recognized the fact that saying "U r so l33t!" to a girl won't get you laid?

... more games would be developed for Linux / Mac?

... bandwidth was cheap?

... technology didn't change the minute you put together your "dream machine"?

... E3 was open to people under 18 years of age?

and finally, wouldn't it be nice if... I'd learn when to shutup?

Note: This article was created solely for the purposes of being a good read and hopefully getting a few laughs. It was not meant to insult anyone, individual or company - get a sense of humour if you take it otherwise.

Edit 07/12/2002: Well it appears that this article sparked quite an interest in the community. Amongst the emails I've received (most good, some a bit negative) was one from Alex "Marweas" Rodberg. Here's what he had to say:

... developers created games with the community, instead of just "what we think you'll like"?
Just as soon as the community manages to agree on ANYTHING.

... Sierra took their heads out of their asses and:
- listened to the community for once?
See Sierras Tribes Council at the beginning of month.

- apologized, rehired, given a letter of "how stupid we are" and offered the jobs back to every Dynamix employee they've ever wrongfully fired?
*sigh* If only the bad could have been separated from the good...

- wouldn't spam the community forums with advertisements of other "great" Sierra products?
Are you saying Homeworld isnt GREAT? Ok, now were going to have to throw down.

- realized, "Hey, we're f*cking idiots!"?
Nah.

... Marweas submitted news and gave information to Tribes sites other than TribalWar?
My regular news list is TW, T2BB, T-U, PlanetTribes, EuroTribesPlayer, and occasionally some others.

... that damned UE Error would disappear from Tribes 2?
It will, after Garage Games finishes the patch for it this summer.

... we all owned a working jetpack with a nifty stormhammer to destroy those pesky squirrels?
Now who could argue with that?!?

... Tribers would realize that they wouldn't stand a chance against a HERC? I mean, com'on.
Keep working. Weve tried to figure it out, and it would take a coordinated assault of at least 12-20 specialized Tribers to take down one contemporary HERC.

So there you go. Sierra making wishes come true right before your eyes. :) Now maybe you can do something about Halo and Windows and the rest.
