Sierra closes its doors

During restructuring of its games division, Vivendi Universal closed the doors of its Sierra office in Bellevue, Washington. As a result, Sierra's Hoyle game line was shut down. About 350 people were fired as of yesterday. This is the third closing of a development company by Vivendi Universal in the last 2 months. The other victims were Papyrus Studios and Impressions Games. All three companies were cut off for not living up to corporate expectations.

Sierra Entertainment was the parent company of Dynamix (which was shut down for similar reasons), and owned the rights to the Starsiege and Tribes franchises, both originally developed by Dynamix.

Update: This closure does not affect the team working on Tribes: Vengeance (who was moved from Sierra to VU Games Northwest almost a year ago) or Starsiege:2845. Rejoice. Thanks TribalWar and Trajan.
