Maybe you've never even thought about what program you use to browse websites. For most users of Microsoft operating systems, it really doesn't seem like too much of a choice: Internet Explorer is what came preinstalled with your computer.

The problems with Internet Explorer are fundamental to its core components. Browser Helper Objects (BHO's) are the main component of spyware applications and hijack utilities, often requiring a reformat or serious spyware removal with high-powered, dangerous applications. If you're not an expert computer user, this sort of thing will slow you down, cost you money and waste your time. Plus, you could be unwittingly exposing your computer for crackers to use as their launching point for attacks.

While alternate browsers have always been available (Netscape is one of the most widely-recognized names around), most people won't consider them as an option until it becomes necessary to do so. The Google Toolbar, a welcome extension to Internet Explorer, helps block some popups and gives easy access to Google's searching capabilities. There is a better way to deal with browser security, though.

The Mozilla Organization announced the release of Firefox 1.0PR today. For those unaware, Firefox is an alternate browser that blocks popups, lets you browse multiple pages in one browser window, provides easy access to searching capabilities, and is immune to ActiveX exploits. It installs and uninstalls right alongside with Internet Explorer; and is the browser of choice for many of the technically inclined people at tJY.

It's something to consider looking into, anyways. Only a 4.5MB download for Windows versions; a more secure and snappy browsing experience; and something to look forward to if your "random toolbar of the day" in Internet Explorer has enraged you one time too many.

Update: Oh, and the best part: (the part that really helps out in a Halo-related way!) If you've ever had trouble submitting Fan Fiction stories to HBO, Firefox is a much better way to perform the task.
