nVidia updated their binary Linux drivers yesterday for x86 and AMD64/EM64T with some exciting new features:

  • Added OpenGL 2.0 Support.
  • Added initial support for Xinerama + OpenGL; see APPENDIX V in the text README.
  • Added support for the EXT_framebuffer_object OpenGL extension.
  • Added NV-CONTROL support for manipulating DDC/CI settings; see the AllowDDCCI X config option in the text README.
  • Added support for GPU clock manipulation; see the "Coolbits" X config option documented in Appendix D.
  • Added support for NVIDIA Quadro G-Sync.
  • Added support for GeForce 6200 AGP.
  • Improved DPMS behavior on flatpanels.
  • Removed support for legacy GPUs; please see "Chapter 1. Selecting and Downloading the NVIDIA Packages for Your System" in the README for details.
  • Install NVIDIA OpenGL headers by default.

This is the first of nVidia's drivers to support OpenGL 2.0, enabling the development of an exciting new level of graphics support. OpenGL 2.0 supports a fully-programmable graphics pipeline, more flexible and powerful than Microsoft's DirectX 9 technology, which makes a whole new class of graphics possible.

Surprisingly, this release comes before the Windows driver, enabling OpenGL 2.0 support on Linux before any other. We can probably expect the Windows driver to share the same featureset as its Linux counterpart, possibly opening up the availability of the OpenGL 2.0 API for Windows developers to use. This should be encouraging to game developers on all platforms, and we may yet see games based on OpenGL 2.0 in the near future. Comments >>
