Before reading, please take another look at the title of this news post, emphasis on rumours. Eurogamer caught wind of some rather juicy Halo 3 rumours, much more succulent than the previous ones. According to a post on the Team Xbox message boards by, "...some bloke who claims his mate's uncle works for Bungie", the darker and more gritty storyline to Halo 3 will be set to thousands of years before the original.

What's more, Bungie has some rather extensive plans for online co-op and multiplayer, as they are "...attempting to maintain an online co-operative component for the campaign supporting more than two players at once," and that Halo 3 "...will have a multiplayer mode which pits players against bots in scenarios that are directly connected to the story of the game." More than fifty players – on select maps – are planned for Xbox Live.

Furthermore, several maps from Halo 2 will be returning in multiplayer mode, including Zanzibar, Hang Em High, and Sidewinder, though they will be in a more war-torn state. And if that weren't enough, there is also a map editor and movie maker in the works and you will be able to send and receive maps / movies over Xbox Live.

This sounds too good to be true. And you know what they say if it sounds too good to be true...

Update: These rumours had me tingling all over, so I decided to speak with Louis Wu of HBO to ease my mind. He knowledgeably pointed me to part one (apparently) of Narcogen's rumour control over at R.Net. It put a lot of what was mentioned above into perspective; be sure to give it a good read to help form your own opinions.
