An interview on Game Informer.com sheds a little more light on Xbox 360's backwards compatibility support. Microsoft's Peter Moore mentioned that MS "...will probably be in a position in about two weeks to give [us] a list [that] will go up on Xbox.com and it will get updated as more and more games get through certification." It is not yet known how many games will be on this compatibility list, and no games were listed (though I think it's safe to assume headliners like Halo 2, will be on the list).

As emulation is required to play Xbox games on the 360, Moore points out that the backwards compatible games would need an update download: "There will just be an auto-update that you may not even be aware that happens." The example he uses is for Crimson Skys - if it becomes backwards compatible, an update will be posted on Xbox.com and if there is enough user interest, an email alert could be sent out. He continues, "Bottom line, you will start seeing more concrete information in two weeks. We will post a list. The guys continue to pound through these games and the emulation is working well. After launch, we will continue to do it. Until consumers show lack of interest, then we will move on."

Looks like the 360 may be more backwards compatible than previously thought. Good news indeed.
